Poker comes alive: how the battles of Mythsworn changed
Spells became cards, creatures became living poker cards, and our heroes got their names. A look at the new battles of Mythsworn: Spells & Poker.
When we announced Mythsworn: Spells & Poker, we described it as an RPG where every battle is a poker game. That is still true, but the game has grown into something more: in Ascendra, the Mythsworn don't draw swords. They draw cards, and their cards rise to fight.
Creatures are living poker cards
This is the biggest change. Your creatures are poker cards: summon one onto the board and it comes alive, fights every turn and still counts in your hands. The mightiest step right out of their card.
The Phoenix is an Ace of Blaze. The Four Horsemen are four Kings. A creature is a fighter and a card at the same time, so every summon changes the hands you can complete.

Your spells are a deck
Spells used to be three fixed slots. They are now cards you draw: each hero has three 30-card decks to build, with spells and creatures of four rarities. You keep up to six cards in hand, your mana reserve fills faster every round, and the cards you don't need go to the Void to give you more mana.
A turn reads simply: lay your pair on the edge of the grid, cast your spells, then tap End.
Four heroes with a name
Our four mages now have a name and new portraits: Ardan the Pyromancer, Neva the Bellwarden, Elowen the Thornwitch and Silas the Necromancer. They still rise from Initiate to Champion to Legend in the middle of a fight, and you can tell their form by their light. A fourth form, Mythic, awaits the bravest: you discover it by playing.
Monsters play cards too
The monsters were already cheating: stolen cards, silenced spells, traps on the grid. They now play their scrolls as cards and summon creatures of their own, so the board fills up on both sides.
What stays the same
The shared 5 × 5 grid, the rows, columns and diagonals that strike, the Ascension, the four cursed dungeons and the Citadel, and the story of Ascendra. And the rules we hold to: a one-time purchase, nothing to pay to win, no ads, no energy, and no data collected by the studio.
Everything is on the game page, and the portraits of Ardan, Neva, Elowen and Silas show each hero in action. Follow us on X, YouTube and Instagram.
