The Bellwarden, mistress of frozen time
She doesn't strike first. She silences the monster, sends its blows back and freezes it in place, then tolls the knell.
First entry in our series on the heroes of Mythsworn: Spells & Poker: the Bellwarden.
Who she is
A frost priestess: every toll of her bell freezes time, bones and hearts. She is one of the two heroes playable from the very start of the adventure, alongside the Pyromancer.
How she plays
She is the control hero. Her color is the Knell (the blue cards): three cards of her color in a line deal ×1.5 damage. Her power lowers the rank of cards in her own poker hand: an 8 becomes the 7 that closes a straight, a Queen becomes the Jack of her pair.
She has the most health of the four (110 at the start) and wins by stopping the monster from playing: her school cards silence, freeze and send blows back.
Her four forms
Each poker hand fills the Ascension gauge, and she rises in the middle of a fight. Each form hits harder, gains health and armor, and changes her power, and at each Ascension a creature joins her.

- Initiate, Low Note (0 mana): one card of her poker hand drops 1 rank.
- Champion, Deep Knell (0 mana): two cards of her hand drop 1 rank each. As she becomes a Champion, an Ice Mirror joins her: it takes the blows and sends them back.
- Legend, Bourdon (3 mana): the same two cards, then 16 damage to the enemy she picks. As she becomes a Legend, the Frost Golem rises and freezes the monster.
- Mythic (Transcendence): the ultimate form, unlocked at the end of the adventure. Discover it by playing.
How to play her well
- Before laying your pair, lower the card your line is missing: one rank down is often enough for a straight or three of a kind.
- The Ice Mirror is the best moment to let the monster attack: it hurts itself.
- Her ideal familiar: Aethryn, the frost dragon, who delays the monster's special attack.
